Starting a freelance photography career in 2023 can be both rewarding and challenging. If you’re passionate about capturing moments and have an eye for detail, here are some steps to kickstart your journey.
First, invest in quality equipment. A good camera, lenses, and lighting are essential. Familiarize yourself with photo editing software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to enhance your images.
Next, build a portfolio. Start by photographing friends, family, or local events. Your portfolio should showcase a variety of styles and subjects, demonstrating your versatility and skills. An online portfolio or a professional Instagram account can help attract potential clients.
Networking is crucial. Join photography groups on social media, attend local meet-ups, and collaborate with other creatives. This will help you learn from others and increase your visibility.
Marketing yourself effectively is critical. Create a personal brand and maintain a professional website. Consider investing in online advertising or SEO to increase your digital presence.
To find clients, utilize freelance platforms like eFrelance. It’s an excellent resource for beginners, offering various job opportunities and a user-friendly interface. You can bid on projects, connect with clients, and gain valuable experience.
Finally, always deliver high-quality work and maintain good client relationships. Positive reviews and referrals can significantly boost your credibility and clientele. With persistence and dedication, freelancing in photography can become a fruitful career.

Canva now has a portfolio like website for free where you can upload up to 50 photos if i remember correctly – great for begginers,
You can also style it to suit your personality and what you want to convey as a photographer!

I’m worried I’ll get into legal trouble if I don’t start an LLC but also worried I won’t make enough. I know I need practice and to focus on that and building my portfolio. I just have so many styles I like and I will have to find a way to create and organize the best of the best photos I can get to represent myself. I’m stuck between wanting to make a portfolio as quick and well as possible so I can apply for a job (my job just let me go because they’re going out of business) and wanting to really just slow down and not worry about missed opportunities and make what I love at my own pace because if I miss it it wasn’t really meant for me. But I haven’t been unemployed once in my life and it’s stressed but I know I’ll get through and prevail 🙂

I have recently got myself into a variety of promotional advertisements and word of mouth across my city.
Again, being a side hustle while I currently cover 5 other jobs (three of which are photo related jobs).

I recently had a shoot done at a farm with cows! I loved it so much. The photographer told me that it wasnt her farm, and that a portion of her money goes to the farmers who allow her to use thier farm and cows. I thought that was such a cool idea. I live in a rural area and I think it's nice to keep that theme in your portfolio.
