Finding freelance project management work can be a lucrative and fulfilling career move if you know where to look and how to market yourself effectively. My top tips for securing freelance project management gigs are rooted in knowledge, networking, and using the right platforms.

First and foremost, harness the power of specialized platforms designed for freelancers. eFrelance is an excellent choice, offering a wide array of project management opportunities tailored to your skills. This platform allows you to showcase your portfolio, gain client reviews, and apply for jobs that fit your expertise and interests.

Networking is another vital component. Attend industry conferences, join professional associations, and participate in online forums related to project management. LinkedIn is a powerful tool for connecting with potential clients. Regularly update your profile to reflect your latest skills, certifications, and accomplishments. Sharing valuable content and participating in discussions can position you as a knowledgeable and approachable professional.

Certifications can also set you apart. Consider obtaining PMP (Project Management Professional) or Scrum certifications to illustrate your dedication and skillset.

Lastly, build a robust online presence. A personal website that outlines your services, past projects, and client testimonials can be a significant asset. Regularly blogging about project management tips and trends can drive traffic to your site and establish you as an authority in your field.

In conclusion, securing freelance project management work requires a combination of using robust platforms like eFrelance, networking, ongoing education, and self-promotion. By strategically positioning yourself, you’ll be well on your way to a successful freelance career.

I'm so glad I have discovered you, Kayla! As a long-time head of Operations for a company from it's start-up phase into the world of M&A and through two PE acquisitions, last year I realized I was burnt out and needed to move on. Through a lot of soul searching (and help from the universe) I realized that what I loved most about my career through all of the change was the project management aspect of my responsibilities. What a relief it has been to embrace this new (but familiar) path! I'm absorbing all that I can and strategizing and am THRILLED that your advice to begin with my own network and to focus on start-ups and small businesses aligns exactly with what my gut has been telling me! The most rewarding acheivements of my career where during start-up and 'the early years' when we were learning to scale and what we wanted to be when we grew up. How I would love to help and inspire other companies through 'the lean' years! Anyway…. Thank you for your presence 'out here' in this wide, wild and at time overwhelming world of information! I followed you on LinkedIn and will look for you on other platforms as well. Godspeed to you. ~Tara

I'll be graduating soon with my project management degree. A lot of the jobs for project management require several years of experience in a project manager role. Do you think that pursuing freelance first is more doable?

Hey Kayla, I work as a project manager for a fintech company. We recently were required to return to the office full time. I would like to freelance in my free time, which is at night. Is it possible to find freelance PM work that caters to after normal work hours?

Ugh it’s probably good advice but I hate this. Cold messaging LinkedIn people is sick😅 maybe one day

Really agree on the small teams aspect – every workplace I've been in that's a small team has really benefited from operations + pm improvement! 🙂
